Book Review #13: The Evolution Of Mara Dyer

Mara Dyer once believed she could run from her past.
She can’t

She used to think her problems were all in her head.
They aren’t.

She couldn’t imagine that after everything she’s been through, the boy she loves would still be keeping secrets.

She’s wrong.

In this gripping sequel to The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, the truth evolves and choices prove deadly.

What will become of Mara Dyer next?

* The Break Down:
Are you are looking for a thrilling, kick-ass sequel with spine-chilling-angst and heart-throbbing romance?

..well hells bells I think you found it!

This book has left me in a place I'm sure I don't want to come back from. Their were so many twist and turns I'm pretty sure I might have whiplash. It was disturbingly insane yet utterly romantic.

Lets talk about the disturbingly insane part of this book first because It.was.Crazy.  From terrifying hand-made dolls , to dead crows dropping from the sky, to mental hospitals ; The Evolution of Mara Dyer defines creepiness to a whole new level.

Surpisingly this part is was I enjoyed the most from the first book and was doubly glad to see again, in an even higher degree in this sequel. The pacing was a great match as well with the perfect amount of spine chilling happenings that kept me positively glued to it all. To balance it out, The reader gets some well needed fantastic humor that made me burst into laughter more than once! I especially adored Jamie's sarcasm!

"Perhaps because she is batshit crazy, Brooke."
Jamie slow-clapped.
"Jamie," Brooke said calmly. "I'm not sure that's productive."
"I was applauding Mara for her extraordinary appropriate use of the term 'batshit crazy'.”

To be honest, once again I absolutely loved all the characters . Noah, Jamie, and Daniel grew on me even further, if thats even possible. I think my favorite two were Daniel and Noah though. Daniel is just an amazing big brother and I loved some of his zingers.

My brother cleared his throat. "I wish she knew that I think she is the most hilarious person on Earth. And that whenever she's not home, I feel like I'm missing my partner in crime."

My throat tightened. Do not cry. Do not cry.

"I wish she knew that she's really Mom's favorite--"

I shook my head here.

"--the princess she always wanted. That Mom used to dress her up like a little doll and parade her around like Mara was her greatest achievement. I wish Mara knew that I never minded, because she's my favorite too.”

Awe! This part had me aching for sure, It was sweet and raw.

And then there was Noah *Pause to swoon.

Smooth, charming, complicated, and protective, He said the most irresistible things, turning the best of into puddles of goo.

“If I were to live a thousand years, I would belong to you for all of them. If we were to live a thousand lives, I would want to make you mine in each one.”

Oh Noah, Noah Noah; Marry me?

Oh and I'm proud and oddly surprised to say that this time around , the romance did not give everything else a back seat. It's was largely present in the entire book but did not dominate the plot at which I loved.

Word of warning: The cliffhanger is even worse than The Unbecoming. I'm almost sorry I read this early. Almost. But what did I expect, when The Evolution was so much more intense, so much scarier, so much more sick and beautiful and gut-wrenching?

Overall, the plot-line was crazy, twisted, unexpected, and a hell of a marvelous ride. Pieces of information were thrown at you one after another and sometimes, even though it was hard to keep up with, Miss Hodkin made it possible. There was drama, intrigue, action, craziness (which I will keep repeating because this will never stopping recurring when it comes to Mara Dyer books), humor, and an amazing romance. It was a great sequel that got me pumped for the third book that come out in a few months!

  1. I actually didn't enjoy this one all that much! *hides* I found that Mara depended too much on Noah. But I'm happy to hear you're such a huge fan of this book, Shirin! I really loved Daniel as well. Developed siblings are always some of my favorite characters.

  2. I loved The Unbecoming but I still haven't managed to pick this one up yet. Maybe that's a good thing with the cliffhanger you mentioned ;)

    Great review!

  3. I'm not sure if I should read this one. I didn't enjoy the first one due to Mara's obsession with Noah, her decision making skills, and just Noah in general. Your review really makes me want to give the series another shot.
