Book Review #5 Onyx

Straight From The Reader Mouth.

Book Review #5
Onyx by  Jennifer Armentrout
(Lux #2)

Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…
Thanks to his alien mojo, Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems.

Something worse than the Arum has come to town…

The Department of Defense are here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we're linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And there's this new boy in school who’s got a secret of his own. He knows what’s happened to me and he can help, but to do so, I have to lie to Daemon and stay away from him. Like that's possible. Against all common sense, I'm falling for Daemon. Hard.

But then everything changes…

I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?

No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies…

* The Break Down:

“Oh holy alien babies everywhere!”

If you're like me and thought that Obsidian was great, then Onyx is about to blow you away. For me, going into Onyx I had very high expectations; seriously sky high because of how much I loved Obsidian, and it managed to exceeded every single one of my extremely and ridiculously high expectations. Armentrout gives you everything that you could ever want in a sequel and then some you didn't even know you wanted! It was full of romance, fretfulness, action, and my personal favorite smart-assery.

The Lux series has introduced me to a boat load of new words I plan on using if I am ever in need an insult, my personal favorite being "douche canoe"  Classic.

One of the reasons I believe I'm so mesmerized by the Lux series is because of its main character, Katy Swartz.  Katy's extreme love for books and blogging mixed with her witty attitude, and of course her impolitic choices some how make her relatable. I find myself agreeing with most of the choices Katy makes even if they do end in disaster. Katy always has the best intentions at heart, the problem is that you can't always control the outcome and sometimes best intentions don't always have the best outcome. That being said Katy is an extremely strong character. Although things don't always turn in her favor she always wants to protect the ones that she loves, even if she must suffer.

Daemon Black *Pause to swoon
Is back in full force in Onyx, except this time he is determined to get Katy to like him. Daemon is still the same egotistical, smug boy from Obsidian, but now the reader gets to see glimpse of his sweet side. How Katy resisted him, I will never know. Between the pen pokes, his witty sense or the way he says "Kitten" I would have been a puddle of mush. I think it's safe to say that Daemon is my new book boyfriend, Sorry Patch.
Oh, as for Daemon and Katy's dysfunctional relationship, it only gets better.

“Not in this lifetime, buddy,” I said finally.

“Resistance is futile, Kitten.”

“So is your charm.” “We’ll see.”

Overall, Onyx will knock you off your seat and leave you dying for the next book.

Wish List Wednesday! #1

I found this really cool meme hosted by the Pen to Paper blog (which has some really lovely reviews, so definitely check her out!). Basically, you just post a different book from your wishlist every Wednesday.

I figured this would  be a way to make sure I update at least every week,.

Now comes the tough part: deciding which book on my to-be-read list to have the honor of being my first Wishlist Wednesday choice. After lots of debating, and internal conflict, I've finally decided on : The 5th Wave By Rick Yancey

The Passage meets Ender’s Game in an epic new series from award-winning author Rick Yancey.

After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.

Now, it’s the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth’s last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie’s only hope for rescuing her brother—or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

I've heard endless praise from all my favorite bloggers, so I feel like I absolutely have to get my hands on a copy of this!

Let me know what you thought of it and of course your Wish List Wednesday's!

Book Review #4 Obsidian

Straight From The Reader Mouth.
One Read  At a Time.
Book Review #4
Obsidian by  Jennifer Armentrou
(Lux Series #1)

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.
And then he opened his mouth.
Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens.
The hot alien living next door marks me.
You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don't kill him first, that is.
        -Goodreads.com

* The Break Down:

Let’s just start by saying, truth be told actually building up the momentum to read Obsidian probably took longer then it took me to finish the book. Starting the Lux Series was hard, for one reason and one reason alone, I was extremely skeptical on what to expect. I mean seriously aliens, REALLY?

... Haven’t they stretched the whole paranormal thing a little to thin?

I idea of “little green men with big eyes and spindly arms … or giant insects or something like a lumpy little creature” really didn't do it do it for me.

Sweet Baby Jesus, did Daemon Black change that for me.

To my shock and dismay Obsidian turned out to be better then I could have imagined. For those of you like me, who have overlooked the Lux Series on a shelf for whatever reason; I'm here to tell you back up and pick that mother up!

Katy is a kick-ass main character. She is witty, funny, and knows how to hold her own. I loved Katy as female lead character.
Why you might ask?

Well, first of all, she loves books and blogging. It's not often when you get a kick-ass female lead who reads and blogs right?

Also she is not like the YA fiction characters we are so used to reading about that are so dependent on their guys. Katy is 100% NOT a push-over character. Does she get trampled and stomped on? Sure. But does she know how to throw it right back? HELL YES. She's not swayed or knocked down and her strength was surprising.

Now let’s talk about Daemon Black * (Pause to swoon)

“So the dickhead had a name. Daemon—seemed fitting. And of course his sister would be as attractive as him. Why not? Welcome to West Virginia, the land of lost models.”

Daemon’s character for me was so out of this world!
... Seriously since technically he is really from out of this world.
Daemon comes across as an obnoxious, rude, arrogant, mean and in Katy's words, as a totally stab worthy non-human being. But he also was protective, funny and lets just be clear; a total babe. Daemon's bad boy personality is an act that makes him unapproachable and unfriendly, which is the way he prefers to live. But in reality it's a lie.

“I've always found that the most beautiful people, truly beautiful inside and out, are the ones who are quietly unaware of their effect." His eyes searched mine intently, and for a moment we stood there toe to toe. "The ones who throw their beauty around, waste what they have? Their beauty is only passing. It's just a shell hiding nothing but shadows and emptiness.”
 -Daemon Black

If you’re looking for a I-just-rolled-off-the-couch-laughing-so-hard, I-think-my-heart-just-burst-into-a-thousand-sheds type of book, than I definitely recommend this book to you. I found that the characters were well developed, the dialogue was funny as hell and the plot was driven. Readers will thoroughly enjoy Katy and Daemon’s journey and will be left wanting more at the end.

Book Review #3 Shatter Me

Book Review #3
Shatter Me by Tahareh Mafi

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war– and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

* The Break Down:

I just want to start by saying holy-mother-of-all-thing-awesome
This book honestly deserves a category of its own.

When I started reading this book, I thought I was diving into another Twilight or Hunger Games series but I was pleasantly surprised. Let me say No one will ever read a book with the same writing style as Tahareh.

If you’re looking for a novel, YOU HAVE FOUND IT! This book is a mesmerizing debut,of heart-stopping action and a swoon-worthy romance. Shatter me is a forget-your-homework, and quit-your-job on-sit read.

The Writing. *(Pause for effect)

Reading though this book is like being addicted to nicotine, you get addicted so quickly and there is no substitute that can possibly be as powerful and filling as it is.

Call me dramatic but seriously,

This book was just as just as unique as Tahareh name. When started reading, I found it odd how many of Juliet's thoughts were marked out, but as I continued to read I found that those were the parts I fascinated by. The crossed out words gave a way Juliet's real thoughts, and the lack of grammar made her seem human and relatable to the condition she was in. And let me just say it worked!

Another thing I absolutely loved was that EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER in this novel had layers. It's like the most interesting onion you will ever see.

Warner, for instance. I hated this dude. I hated his so much, he's as young and creepy as they come, almost like professor Moriarty, from Sherlock Holmes, except worse! Yeah I know, how can you be creeper then Moriarty.. How do you achieve that?

Even so, I'm reading this book and thinking "what this hell is wrong with this kid" then suddenly I sympathize for him? …and then I understand him! WHAT? Then I start to question if he's good gu…Not okay.

Then there’s Adam * Pause to swoon. Who was terribly frustrating and impressive character to understand. It is extremely hard for an author to make a reader indecisive on how they feel about a character right away. First Adam walks in to her cell and takes Juliet's bed from her making her sleep on the floor, jerk-face. Then he's writes her that note and it’s like I'm in love.

Now Juliet, she not this frail female character that constantly needs helped. She just doesn't give in to what others want and I love it. She's not swayed by power, selfishness or by fear. She's just so kick-ass. It was refreshing to see a character with absolutely nothing, build up upon doubts and fear and become a strong, powerful character.

Over all, Tahereh's writing was so fluent, her characters were remarkably defined and let’s just get it got there in the open, the plot was SEXY as hell.
Now here are some awesome things I found:

Adam oh Adam.

Lets just stare.

Alec looked down at the shattered pieces in disbelief. “You BROKE my PHONE.”
Jace shrugged. “Guys don’t let other guys keep calling other guys. Okay, that came out wrong. Friends don’t let friends keep calling their exes and hanging up. Seriously. You have to stop.”
Alec looked furious. “So you broke my brand new phone? Thanks a lot.”
Jace smiled serenely and lay back on the grass. “You’re welcome.”

“I think,” Jace said, “that you don’t want to tell your secrets, so you decided to break up with Alec because..”

“No killing,” Jordan said. “We’re trying to make you feel peaceful, so you don’t go up in flames. Blood, killing, war, those are all non-peaceful things. Isn’t there anything else you like? Rainforests? Chirping birds?”
“Weapons,” said Jace. “I like weapons.”
“I’m starting to think we have a problematic issue of personal philosophy here.”
Jace leaned forward, his palms flat on the ground. “I’m a warrior,” he said. “I was brought up as a warrior. I didn’t have toys, I had weapons. I slept with a wooden sword until I was five. My first books were medieval demonologies with illuminated pages. The first songs I learned were chants to banish demons. I know what brings me peace, and it isn’t sandy beaches or chirping birds in rainforests. I want a weapon in my hand and a strategy to win.”
Jordan looked at him levelly. “So you’re saying that what brings you peace … is war.”
“Now you get it.”

“We shouldn’t,” protested Isabelle. “The Clave has a plan.”
“The Clave has the collective intelligence of a pineapple,” said Jace.
Alec blinked up at them. “Jace is right.”
Isabelle turned on her brother. “What do you know? You weren’t even paying attention.”
“I was,” Alec said, injured. “I said Jace was right.”
“Yeah, but there’s like a 90% chance of me being right most of the time, so that’s not proof you were listening,” said Jace. “That’s just a good guess.”

Magnus rolled onto his back and put his feet up on the arm of the sofa. “What do you care if Alec’s miserable?”
“What do I care?” Jace said, so loudly that Chairman Meow rolled off the couch and landed on the floor. “Of course I care about Alec; he’s my best friend, my parabatai. And he’s unhappy. And so are you, by the look of things. Takeout containers everywhere, you haven’t done anything to fix up the place, your cat looks dead —“
“He’s not dead.”

She turned to look at Sebastian, lying on the bed. He was shirtless, and even in the dim light the old whip weals across his back were visible. She had always been fascinated by Shadowhunters but had never thought she would find one whose personality she could stand for more than five minutes, until Sebastian.

“Simon,” said a voice at his shoulder, and he turned to see Izzy, her face a pale smudge between dark hair and dark cloak, looking at him, her expression half-angry, half-sad. “I guess this is the part where we say goodbye?”

A moment later, Helen had returned; she was walking slowly now, and carefully, her hand on the back of a thin boy with a mop of wavy brown hair. He couldn’t have been older than twelve, and Clary recognized him immediately. Helen, her hand firmly clamped around the wrist of a younger boy whose hands were covered with blue wax. He must have been playing with the tapers in the huge candelabras that decorated the sides of the nave. He looked about twelve, with an impish grin and the same wavy, bitter-chocolate hair as his sister.
Jules, Helen had called him. Her little brother.

The impish grin was gone now. He looked tired and dirty and frightened. Skinny wrists stuck out of the cuffs of a white mourning jacket whose sleeves were too long for him. In his arms he was carrying a little boy, probably not more than two years old, with the same wavy brown hair that he had; it seemed to be a family trait. The rest of his family wore the same borrowed mourning clothes: following Julian was a brunette girl about ten, her hand firmly clasped in the hold of a boy the same age: the boy had a sheet of tangled black hair that nearly obscured his face. Fraternal twins, Clary guessed. After them came a girl who might have been eight or nine, her face round and very pale between brown braids.

The misery on their faces cut at Clary’s heart. She thought of her power with runes, wishing that she could create one that would soften the blow of loss. Mourning runes existed, but only to honor the dead, in the same way that love runes existed, like wedding rings, to symbolize the bond of love. You couldn’t make someone love you with a rune, and you couldn’t assuage grief with it, either. So much magic, Clary thought, and nothing to mend a broken heart.
“Julian Blackthorn,” said Jia Penhallow, and her voice was gentle. “Step forward, please.”
Julian swallowed and handed the little boy he was holding over to his sister. He stepped forward, his eyes darting around the room. He was clearly scouring the crowd for someone. His shoulders had just begun to slump when another figure darted out onto the stage. A girl, also about twelve, with a tangle of blond hair that hung down around her shoulders: she wore jeans and a t-shirt that didn’t quite fit, and her head was down, as if she couldn’t bear so many people looking at her. It was clear that she didn’t want to be there — on the stage or perhaps even in Idris — but the moment he saw her, Julian seemed to relax. The terrified look vanished from his expression as she moved to stand next to him, her face ducked down and away from the crowd.

“Julian,” said Jia, in the same gentle voice, “would you do something for us? Would you take up the Mortal Sword?”

His eyes shone when he looked at her, green as spring grass.
He has always had green eyes, said the voice in her head. People often marvel at how much alike you are, he and your mother and yourself. His name is Jonathan and he is your brother; he has always protected you.
Somewhere in the back of Clary’s mind she saw black eyes and whip marks, but she didn’t know why. He’s your brother. He’s your brother, and he’s always taken care of you.

“Okayyyyy,” Isabelle said in a low voice, “When did Brother Zachariah get hot?”

Book Review #2
Shattered By Elizabeth Lee

Alyssa Boyd had big plans. Big plans that included getting the hell out of the little town she’d grown up in with her two best friends. When she decided it was time to let one of them know her true feelings for him; a change of plans resulted in a tragic turn of events. Now, Alyssa is left alone to find her way out of the darkness that an untimely death has left in its wake.

Jesse Vaughn was never good at letting people in. He’d learned a long time ago that it’s easier that way because people leave, or, unfortunately, die. The one person he wanted to let in doesn’t want him anymore. The only problem is he can’t stop thinking about her. Jesse returns to the childhood home he left behind with one goal in mind… to convince her that they should be together.

When Jesse finds Alyssa she’s not the same girl he left behind. She’s wild, reckless and hell-bent on not giving Jesse a second chance. Lucky for Jesse, his stubborn streak has always been a mile-wide and he’s not about to give up on her.  When your life has been shattered can you really pick up all the pieces and move on?

* The Break Down:

If you’re a reader looking for an epic romance and a tear-choking book, well hells bells, you've found it. If you’re looking for a action packed, I-can-not-get-my-eyes-unglued-from-this-book type of thing, keeping looking this book isn't going to do it for you.

As much as I loved this book, it wasn't the plot I fell for; it was more of the idea of what it symbolized. Elizabeth Lee had an amazing story to tell but I only able to catch glimpses of it.

Shattered was a thoughtfully written YA love story. told in the perspectives of Alyssa and Jesse; that reminded me of my love for reading, before paranormal and dystopian romances swept me away.  It was refreshing to read about real love, heartbreak and grief with the complications and lack of perfection that reality contains.

What I really loved and something we don't see often anymore in books in general; is truth and meaning behind the words in books. Now-a-days books are just filled with words, used to entertain the reader for short spans of time, easily forgettable. Shattered was a story about the cruel reality of life, the misunderstandings between people and finding the will to live even when you feel completely broken.

Although this book had sadness and re-growth enveloped around it, there was an heir of sexiness incorporated in it, with the male main character Jesse, which had the best of us swooning. Man, if I was a girl who just lost it all, I'd want a "Jesse" there to pick of all the pieces and make it better.

I’m going to go off on a tangent again, but overall this book was beautifully heartbreaking and thoughtfully crafted. Elizabeth Lee had an amazing story to tell, but I was only able to catch glimpses of it. If your a reader looking for an epic romance and a tear-choking book, congrats and enjoy the emotional roller-coaster!

Book Review #1 The Selection

 The Selection by Kiera Cass

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself--and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.
          -Goodreads.com

* The Break Down:

Welcome to a world where if the Bachelor and Graceling were to at one point have a child, this would probably would be their bi-product.

The Selection is centered around a caste system dwindling in wealth of each number starting with the richest, One to 10, which is basically dying on the street. Then there is "the selection" where 35 girls are chosen from different castes to compete for the heart of Prince Maxon and become is bride and queen of their country.

Enter Miss American Singer, who only enters the selection because her mom promises that she can keep half of her income if she does it. Thinking that she won't get picked any how and she'll live a long and happy, though relatively poor life with her secret boyfriend Aspine.

Just goes to show that fictional character should really stop expecting things:

Katniss: No, Prim its only your first year you won't get picked.

Percy Jackson: I'm probably just Hermes son.

Thomas: There is a wonderful world of freedom outside this maze, boys.

RIGHT…

Much to her shock and dismay, America
is selected and goes to live the palace with Maxon and the other girls, where she learns and feels more than she ever expected.

When I started reading The Selection, I sure so sure that it wasn't going to do it for me, I mean lets just start with the names America Singer... does anyone else think it sounds like a superhero? Oh and guess what she sings. How ironic.

 Yeah.

I LOVE it when a book turns out to better then I thought it would be, it's a pleasant surprise

Most of my doubt came in the beginning of the book because I didn't like Aspen
, I still don't. To me Aspen didn't seem that interesting, sure he was swoon worthy but really, I wish there was just more there.

Although I wasn't quite impressed with Aspen
's character it didn't take me long for my opinion of the book to change. I curled up in my bed at nine, and didn't sleep till two. It was just so compelling. I loved all the details of the contestants. It made even the characters with very few lines seem interesting and important and the dimensions of America's character grew as the story progressed, so I never felt detached. Though there was a lot of character reader friction.

I still can't empathize for America
's reasons for wanting him so badly. I really want to understand what she views in him but I can't. I'm hoping he'll pull a Gale and I grow to appreciate him over time but at this moment, I hope he figures out that a supporting role is more fitting for him.

Now moving on to the other side of the love triangle; Prince Maxon.

*Pause to swoon

I found Maxon's character to be refreshing. He's lack of confidence, and frankly his lack of experience in life was surprising. This is a man who is supposed to one day be to rule the country, the guy who is render unless by tears, Too funny. It turns out that Maxon was NOTHING like I expected. Imagined that wrong twice in one post, wow. At the beginning of the book, when Maxon was just an allusion, I expected him to be a snobby, rich bad boy who could do anything he wanted. Could I have possibly been more wrong? Turns out during the end I really came to like him and I am proud to be Team Maxon.

PLEASE FICTIONAL GODS, DO NOT KILL HIM IN THE END!

The Selection in general was just enthralling subject with the caste system. This is a political point that now many authors of dystopian novels uses. Usually the dystopian world we are consistently to seeing is poor society with a wealthy powerful dictatorial head, such as the Capital or The Districts. This is a great tool for novels that are plot driven such as this one. It ables light to be shed without going into too much detail about each caste.

Over all, I loved it and The Selection is one of my favorite reads from 2012. The plot was driven, the characters were defined and Kiera Cass, I praise you as an author.
