Book Review #7
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer By Michelle Hodkin

Mara Dyer doesn’t think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.

It can.

She believes there must be more to the accident she can’t remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.

There is.

She doesn’t believe that after everything she’s been through, she can fall in love.

She’s wrong.

* The Break Down:

If your looking for an  action packed, I-can-not-get-my-eyes-unglued-from-this-book, just-rolled-off-the-couch-laughing-so-hard, my-heart-just-burst-into-a-thousand-sheds type of book type of thing...
...Well hells bells you just found it.

When I opened the pages of The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer I had no idea what to expect. The synopsis really doesn't give you much, so all I had was a  vague synopsis, the eerie cover, and the fantastic title that really set the tone for the book. The overall feel of this book is very different than most YA's out right now. It's very dark. You will realize that from the first page. Sometimes it sent shivers up my spine. But it's also a fantastically done love story that had me aswoon on many occasions. So although I didn't quite know what to expect, I fell in love with this unique and extremely captivating story very, very early on.

Who is Mara Dyer you may ask, well who knows cause thats not even her real name.

"My name is not Mara Dyer, but my lawyer told me I had to choose something. A pseudonym. A nom de plume, for all of us studying for the SATs. I know that having a fake name is strange, but trust me —it’s the most normal thing about my life right now. Even telling you this much probably isn’t smart. But without my big mouth, no one would know that a seventeen-year-old who likes Death Cab for Cutie was responsible for the murders. No one would know that somewhere out there is a B student with a body count. And it’s important that you know, so you’re not next.Rachel’s birthday was the beginning. This is what I remember."
Sorry but thats all i'm spilling. You will have to find out for yourself, but I will say that she was damaged, that a bit of an instatement; and she was unreliable because of that. That was a aspect that I absolutely loved! Mara just really wanted to be a normal girl and that made her relatable and realistic. I loved her sense of humor, it reminded me of mine. Mara Dyer is a mystery you will want to figure out.

To be honest, loved all the characters in this one. Noah and Jamie, Noah Daniel, Joesph and even their parent. I think my favorite two were Daniel and Noah though. Daniel is an amazing big brother and I loved some of his zingers. Noah is just made of yum!! Smooth, charming, complicated and says the most irresistible things. I loved him. He is mine.

Now for the romance....Pause to swoon. Michelle Hodkin is trying to kill us with this romance. Heart attacks and swooning will ensue. Oh man, Noah, Noah, Noah. He is everything you love!I guarantee it! He even has an accent! He's also a bit of a bad boy with a reputation.

He's just....Whoa. I'm gushing, huh?

Let put it into more intelligent sentences. There's no insta-love. There is a believable, intense, sexy attraction that builds slowly and makes you fall in love right along with the characters. I swooned, I giggled and by the end of it I was head over heels.  Mara and Noah really did it for me! Their constant bickering and sarcastic remarks had my falling out of my chair a few times.

How did you get my phone number?” I blurted, before I could stop myself.
“It’s called research.” I could hear him smirking over the phone.
“Or stalking.”
Noah chuckled. “You’re adorable when you’re bitchy.”
“You’re not,” I said, but smiled despite myself.

I love that I, as a reader, am on the same page as Mara when it comes to the confusion over everything. I seriously would go thought chapters and be like "was this english?" But it was nice that instant confusion was instantly fixed. Though I'm still confused on Mara as a whole.

Oh but wait; I'm not done! No, there is more to this story than great characters and heart stopping sexy romance.

Much more.

It's scary. It's 'make the hairs on your arm stand up' eerie. It's awesome! There were many times I just had to set the book down for a few moments so I could just take it all in. I died a thousand little deaths from the sheer hotness and awesomeness of this book. It left me speechless and breathless and this review in no way does it justice! The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is a book I could read over and over, and I probably will!

Overall the language of this book was lyrical. I loved the abstract and unconventional vocabulary (probably comes with having a British character) And the words really just flowed off the page. I loved reading this book. I was addicted. truly... Addicted.

I honestly couldn't wait to read the next book and started it right after I finished this one.

  1. The only part I was confused about was the beginning. If she had to create a fake name, how did the board game move to the letters of MARA?

    1. You totally right! I never thought of it. Nice one. Now the only question is... was it a mistake or foreshadowing ?

    2. Michelle Hodkin said that since Mara supposedly wrote the book, she changed her real name to Mara on everything because she said in the beginning that she couldn't reveal her real name.

    3. Oh! I've read that before, but her friends Rachael and Claire were guessing things like murder, matches, etc for the letters of Mara. That's why I was a bit confused. :-)
